The ulama of Turkey and Turkistan plays a crucial role throughout the history. This book lays out how and in what ways ulama’s religious and political discourses evolved within the 19th and 20th Century in the late Ottoman and the whole Soviet periods. Ulama’s custodian role through its discourses are often informed by a longstanding religious tradition. These discourses are equally shaped by — and contribute in significant ways to — contemporary debates in the Muslim public sphere. By doing so, they seem to redefine and reinforce their power over the society and the state.
This work presents a collection of remarkable studies regarding religious and social changes in the Muslim world. It contributes to the literature by providing thorough arguments for us to gain a new perhaps better understanding of the modernity in the light of `ulama’s approaches to contemporary challenges. It reveals a fact we often rule out, that actually the ulema had a tendency to reconcile with Western reforms and regimes, even support them at the expense of harsh criticisms. In a way, it shows how Islam and tradition continuously negotiated in a rapidly changing world, and how the ulama reacts to and shape larger Islamic social trends.
Throughout 5 chapters, the author provides a comprehensive analysis of the contemporary ulama of Turkey and Turkistan as the dynamic interpreters and producers of religious knowledge. He de-stereotypes the ulama, especially the view that they are inflexible in their attitudes, generally resistant to social changes, and, as a consequence, become redundant. By doing so, he provides an integrative historical and contemporary discussion of ulama in Turkey and Turkistan in both official and semi-unofficial contexts.
With no doubt, this book is sure to become a valuable tool for anyone interested in learning more about this often-misunderstood stance of Ulema in the reform period, and for those social scientists studying/researching the social, religious, political and intellectual history of the modern Turkey and Turkistan.
